Alexandria Freeman ’22 is the first Rollins student to be awarded a study abroad scholarship from the premier Hispanic honor society.

International business major and economics and Spanish double minor Alexandria Freeman ’22 has won a coveted 2022 Study Abroad Award from Sigma Delta Pi, the National Collegiate Hispanic Honor Society. Freeman is the first-ever Rollins student to receive the honor, which will provide funding for her to travel to Spain this fall through a partnership with the University of Oviedo.

“The emphasis Rollins places on global citizenship played a major role in my applying for this award,” says Freeman. “Rollins encouraged my curiosity in the Spanish language and culture, which is exactly what this scholarship hopes to achieve. I’m looking forward to an immersive semester.”

For more than 100 years, Sigma Delta Pi has exemplified academic excellence and proficiency in the study of Spanish. The organization encourages a deeper understanding of Hispanic culture through travel, and Freeman was just one of 12 undergraduates chosen from applicants studying at colleges across the nation.

Freeman also plans to enroll in an additional economics course during her semester in Spain to focus on both of her minors at once.

“I hope to gain more understanding of how economies and businesses outside of the U.S. approach the global economy,” says Freeman. “I’m so excited to reach a larger business audience as I build more confidence in my Spanish language skills.”
